Engineered Quartz vs. Natural Stone: Which Is Better?

A lot of homeowners think that using natural materials for their kitchen countertops is better than using engineered materials. In recent times, however, fewer homeowners hold this view. Many value natural materials like stone and slate because of their distinct patterns and textures, something that engineered materials can never mimic. This has been the case for many years, but there has been a recent shift in preference.

A 2019 Houzz Kitchen Trends Study found that 48% of the respondents preferred engineered quartz kitchen countertops while only 43% preferred natural stone materials. Does this mean then that when it comes to kitchen countertops, engineered quartz is better than natural stone materials? Not necessarily; after all, each has its own pros and cons.

Engineered Quartz: A Cleaner, Low-Maintenance Countertop

One possible reason behind this surge in popularity is the non-porous properties of engineered quartz. And, since engineered quartz doesn’t absorb liquids, you don’t have to worry about stains on your countertops.

However, this doesn’t mean that natural stone countertops are any less durable. They’re just as durable as engineered quartz. The problem is that their resistance to spills vary depending on the type of stone. As such, if you’re thinking of using natural stone for your countertop, make sure to do your research.

Natural Stone: Distinct and Timeless Aesthetics

The surge in the popularity of engineered quartz may also be due to a shift in a preference. It may simply be that homeowners prefer a cleaner look.

If you want to keep up with the latest trends, choosing a white countertop made of engineered quartz would be a good decision. If, however, you prefer something that won’t go out of style soon, choose a granite or marble countertop. There’s a reason why manufacturers keep offering natural stone products.

Still can’t decide on which material to use? When in doubt, it’s best to consult a design professional.
