Repairing Etched Marble Countertops

Marble is one of the most popular materials used in kitchen countertops. It offers several advantages over other countertop materials. For example, while costs may vary depending on the thickness and the exact type of marble, it is often more affordable than other materials of the same dimensions, such as quartz and granite.

Marble is also beautiful and, with some care, it can last a long time. It’s a natural stone that resists scratching from everyday use. You can even have it designed with fancy edges because it is relatively soft compared to granite.

Etching

All materials come with some weaknesses, however, and marble is no exception. Over time, your marble countertops might show signs of etching.

Etching is a chemical reaction that corrodes your marble countertops. In other words, some liquids can “eat” at marble. Some examples are acidic drinks like coffee, wine, alcohol, and soft drinks. Vinegar, ammonia, bleach, and many cleaning solutions also etch marble if the liquid stays on the countertop too long. You might notice these “burned” areas on your marble countertop because they appear duller than the unaffected surfaces.

Repairing Etched Surfaces

You don’t have to replace etched marble countertops to restore the look of your kitchen. Even if you’re thinking about some minor kitchen remodeling, you can still keep your old countertops.

To repair etched marble, repolish and refinish the damaged surface. However, as the severity of etching and the type of finish may vary, it’s a good idea to hire a professional rather than attempting to do it yourself.

Preventing Etching

While marble sealer can prevent staining, it cannot stop physical damage to the stone. Your countertops will still etch if you’re not careful.

A better way to prevent etching on your marble countertops is to use cutting boards, coasters, and trivets. Good cleaning habits are a must, as well.
